Why the stump matters
Leaving a stump behind is not just an eyesore. Old stumps can sucker and regrow, they attract termites and borers close to the house, and they make a patch of the yard unusable for turf, paving or planting. Grinding is almost always cheaper and less disruptive than digging a stump out with an excavator, because it does not tear up the surrounding ground.
How deep do you need to go?
The right depth depends entirely on what comes next. To lay lawn or spread garden beds, grinding 10-15 cm below the surface is usually plenty. If you are laying pavers or pouring a concrete slab, shed footing or driveway, the stump and its main surface roots need to come out deeper so nothing settles or lifts later. Tell us the plan and we will grind to suit it — there is no point paying for depth you do not need, or discovering a root under fresh concrete.
The western-plains catch: rock and hardwood
Werribee, Tarneit and the Melton ring sit on the volcanic plain, which means basalt clay soils that often hide buried rock, and a tree stock heavy on sugar gum, cypress and pine. Those stumps are dense and wide, and the rock is hard on cutting teeth, so grinding here takes longer than the sandy-soil averages you might read online. It is worth knowing before you compare quotes.
What you are left with
Grinding produces a pile of woody grindings mixed with soil. By default we backfill the hole with them and rake it level — they settle over a few weeks and make a fine base for lawn. If you would rather have them gone, or you are laying a hard surface, we cart them away. Either way the area is left ready for the next step.

How far below ground do you grind the stump?
It depends what you are doing with the space. For lawn or garden beds we grind 10-15 cm down; for paving, a slab or footings we go deeper and take out the main surface roots so nothing lifts later. Tell us the plan and we grind to suit.
Can you get a grinder into a small backyard?
Usually yes. We use narrow grinders that fit through a standard side gate, so most backyard stumps are reachable without removing fencing. If access is genuinely blocked, we will tell you the options in the quote.
Do you remove the grindings?
Your choice. By default we backfill the hole with the grindings and rake it level, which makes a good base for turf. If you would prefer them carted away — or you are laying a hard surface — we can remove them instead.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Once the stump is ground below ground level and the crown is destroyed, it will not regrow. Some species can sucker from surface roots if only shaved at the top, which is why grinding down properly matters.
